Many online fighting games have debuted over the years with varying degrees of success in the crowded free-to-play market. It is easy to disregard a new fighting game as being a carbon copy of the last, with titles in this genre typically reduced into violent bouts of even more violent button mashing. Whilst the idea is generally a simple one, kill your opponent before they kill you, developers have found ways of adding variety and innovation to help distinguish themselves from the pack. OGPlanet's Lost Saga doesn't break the mould, but it is a refreshingly polished action fighter that fans of the genre will absolutely adore.
First hitting American shores in late 2009, Lost Saga has now made its way to Europe. The core gameplay remains intact, taking the familiar formula of multiplayer fighters present in other games and adding several interesting dynamics to the mix. Basic gameplay, as you might expect, consists of up to sixteen players battling it out in a variety of game modes on a range of maps. From the typical free-for-all deathmatch modes to the more structured base control derivatives, there is plenty to sink your combo hungry teeth into right off the bat.
First Time In The Game
Immediately after logging into Lost Saga for the first time – players are given the option of completing a short yet informative tutorial. The tutorial only takes a few minutes to complete and is well worth checking out before proceeding to join a game. All players start off their adventures in Lost Saga as a Shadow Assassin, one of the game’s many playable heroes, and must first ‘unlock’ the other characters before being able to play them. The good thing is that none of the game’s heroes are exactly ‘over powered’, so even though most players won’t have access to the higher tier characters right away, the game is still fairly balanced. Anyways, right after completing the tutorial players should go ahead and join their first game by selecting the ‘battle’ button on the bottom-left corner of the screen. I recommend joining a ‘team match’ game first, as players respawn right away after dying. This makes it the most newbie friendly of the game modes.

Skills
Using SkillsEvery Hero in Lost Saga is able to perform 4 powerful skills with their equipped gears. Once the Skill gauge is fully charged you may use the skills with a combination of the A, S, D keys.
- Weapon Skill: SD or R
- Armor Skill: ASD or E
- Helm Skill: AD or W
- Trinket Skill: AS or Q
Skill Effects
Skills ignore the normal blocks and guards. While the skill is initiating there is a certain invulnerability time. The Invulnerability time differs with each skill. Generally skills have:
- Skill Guard Breaker Effect
- Skill Invincible Effect
Skill Gauge
In order to use a skill, the Skill Gauge needs to be full. The Skill Gauge automatically refills as the hero wages battle. The skill icon will light up and pulse once the skill is ready to use.
After Tutorial
The lobby acts as the central hub of Lost Saga, accessible after a relatively small download and installation period. From the lobby you can join games, create your own battle, chat with other players and view quests. In addition you can join Plazas (rooms where players can chat, practice and uh, fish) along with access to the game's store. Jumping into a game is often a quick and easy process, with a Quick Join button automatically dropping you into the next available arena. It doesn't always find a game, but that will become less of an issue once the player base grows.
Once you are in a game it's time to select a Hero. Heroes are Lost Saga's playable characters, and they are divided into three separate archetypes - Melee, Ranged and Magic. There are several Heroes to choose from within each class, each differing in appearance and abilities. As Heroes complete battles and gain experience, they advance in level and are rewarded with Hero Points. These can be spent improving specific character skills such as Dexterity, Speed and Attack strength. You are given a single character to start with - others can be attained through the store.
The basic keyboard layout works well. The arrow keys determine movement whilst the W, S, and D keys are assigned to actions, spells and abilities. Just seven keys are all that is required to play Lost Saga, although you do have the option to create a custom setup if holding down multiple keys isn't your thing. Each Hero has four specific abilities, in addition to blocking, jumping and a basic attack.
Maps are enclosed and usually on multiple levels, so it's important to keep an eye on the minimap to see where teammates and enemies are located. From my experience you should never branch off and face a group of opponents, as tag-teaming is a common annoyance that often renders you incapacitated almost immediately. As your health bar depletes, weapons and gear are stripped from you, so the more of a beating you take the less and less effective you become. Endure enough punishment and you'll be left in just underwear, which is as humiliating as it is strange.
Unloking New Heroes
All players in Lost Saga start off with access to only a single hero (the “Shadow Assassin”), but can quickly unlock the other heroes by playing the game for a bit. I was able to unlock the “Iron Knight” class after a single “Team Match” game, and the “Fire Mage” after four “Team Match” games, so unlocking new heroes doesn’t take that long. Do keep in mind that although new heroes have to be purchased in the game’s store with Pesos (the game’s currency) in order to be used, every time a new hero is unlocked for the first time players are rewarded with ’2 hours’ of free game time with that hero. After those two hours are up, you’ll need to purchase additional time with that hero in the game’s store. It’s not a bad system, as most people won’t play as every single hero, but rather only a handful of them. Personally, I only liked playing as Iron Knight and Infantryman, so I could spend my money on purchasing time only for those heroes rather than all of them. The first two hours with each hero is free, so players will have plenty of time to try them all out and see which they like the best. Also, keep in mind that unlike games like Combat Arms and Wolfteam, (where players purchase items for X amount of days, the timer beginning immediately after the purchase), the hero time in Lost Saga only counts the time spent actually playing the game and that particular hero, not time spent logged off or in the chat lobby.
Hero Levels
Each hero you have gains experience at their own pace. The more you play a specific hero in combat the more that hero levels up.Once a hero gains enough experience they can level up.
Upon Leveling a heroe recieves:
- Pesos equal to (100 x new level)
(ie. so a level 9 heroe leveling to 10 gets 1000 peso upon leveling up)
- Upgrade points
Upgrade Points
Uprade Points are used to upgrade 8 attributes that define your hero. Bring up your hero display on My Item and click on the green arrow to upgrade an attribyte
The 8 stats are:
- Trinket Skill
- Helm Skill
- Armor Skill
- Weapon Skill
- Attack Damage
- Defense
- Speed
- Dexterity
